Few stops on the Santa Fe line drew more travelers than Williams, the town that served as the rail gateway to the Grand Canyon, and the Fray Marcus Hotel was one of its landmarks. The name appears to honor Fray Marcos de Niza, the Franciscan friar who traveled north in 1539 in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. William Henry Jackson, best known for his western survey photographs, made the view, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which copyrighted and sold such scenes, issued it. The date of about 1908 comes from an unverified caption card, so treat it as provisional.
