The ballroom shown here belongs to the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., and the words "The New Willard" written on the photograph point to the rebuilt hotel of the early 1900s, which replaced the older building on Pennsylvania Avenue. The Willard had long been a gathering place for politicians, diplomats, and visitors, so its public rooms carried real social weight. The image comes from Frances Benjamin Johnston's work documenting buildings and interiors, and its cyanotype process gives the room a distinctive blue-toned look that is worth noticing.
