This ballroom interior is part of Frances Benjamin Johnston's record of Washington, D.C., homes, and it shows a room built for large social gatherings in the days before such spaces were common in ordinary houses. Johnston, one of the period's leading photographers of architecture and interiors, often photographed the rooms of prominent residents to document their decoration and furnishings. The image is a cyanotype, a contact-print process that produces the distinctive blue tones associated with early blueprints. Because the record gives only a range of years, the exact date of the photograph is uncertain, but the process and subject place it in the decades around 1900.
