Its title, "The gladiators of the Senate! The bulley's of the House," casts the men of Congress as combatants, and the cartoon's spelling of "bullies" is kept as printed. The record names Lewis Cass, a Northern Democrat, alongside Southern figures such as Robert Barnwell Rhett, Albert Gallatin Brown, and Jeremiah Clemens. The print is probably from about 1852, when fights over slavery and the Compromise of 1850 made both chambers of Congress sharply divided, and New York publishers were producing many such caricatures to comment on those quarrels.
