Senate page boys, the teenagers who ran errands on the floor of the Senate, are the subjects here, caught in the middle of their first snow battle on the Capitol plaza. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work made by a Washington studio that documented the city and its government between the early 1900s and the 1930s. Pages were typically boys in their early teens who carried messages and worked the chamber, so a scene of them tumbling into a snowball fight on the grounds offers a rare glimpse of their off-duty lives. The gelatin silver print captures the Capitol behind them, a reminder of how the building anchored daily life for the people who worked in it.
