The station's first program from its new quarters in the New York Times Building was performed by a WQXR string quartet, captured here as the musicians take up their places in one of the fresh studios. WQXR had been owned by The New York Times since 1944 and was known for classical and serious music, so its move into the newspaper's headquarters marked a shift toward a more polished broadcast home. The photograph, credited to Wide World, shows the everyday mechanics of live radio in 1950: the close arrangement of instruments and microphones, and the careful setup that a studio performance required.
