Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, is a limestone arch spanning a gorge over a hundred feet high, and this stereograph from around 1903 shows it as travelers of that era would have seen it. The card was issued by C.H. Graves of Philadelphia, a publisher of stereoviews that were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. By the early 1900s the site had become a popular tourist destination, and images like this one helped spread its reputation as one of the natural wonders of the country. Stereo cards such as this were a common form of home entertainment and armchair travel at the time.
