Few photographs from the first months of the Civil War show Union officers posed at Arlington House, the Virginia estate of Robert E. Lee, which Federal forces occupied after Lee resigned his U.S. Army commission and left in April 1861. Here Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman poses with his staff and their families, a reminder that the house had quickly become a military post rather than a family home. The albumen print, dated 1861, captures the mix of domestic life and wartime occupation that marked the estate in its early months under Union control.
