This site plan lays out a group of four-family apartment houses for developer Frank Lyon in Lyon Village, a planned residential community in Arlington, Virginia. Drawn in graphite and color pencil on tracing paper, it shows how the buildings were arranged across the land, including their placement on the lots and their relation to streets and open space. Arlington's Lyon Village grew from the late 1930s as a mix of single-family houses and multi-unit buildings in a suburban setting close to Washington. Tracing paper was a standard drafting material because its translucence allowed architects to reproduce a drawing as blueprints for builders.
