Few of Benjamin Henry Latrobe's Virginia sketches name a client as plainly as this one, which records a house designed for Captain William Pennock on Main Street in Norfolk. The drawing belongs to a group of studies Latrobe made of buildings erected or proposed across Virginia in the late 1790s, when the English-born architect was building his practice in the state. Norfolk was rebuilding after a fire in 1794 that destroyed much of the town, and sketches like this one document the domestic architecture of that effort. The wash and graphite work shows how Latrobe worked out his designs before they reached the builder.
