Shown from the waist up and turned to the right, Woody Guthrie is caught mid-performance, his hands on a guitar. The drawing was made by Willa Gray Martin and dated 1943, a year when Guthrie was well known for songs about the Dust Bowl, migrant laborers, and the hard years of the Depression. Born in Oklahoma in 1912, he had traveled widely and written songs from the road, and his plain, direct style made him a central figure in American folk music. Portraits like this one record how he was seen by artists of his time, as a working musician with a guitar and a message.
