Unlike the photographs that usually accompany Walt Whitman's name, this image reproduces a bas-relief plaque, so the face appears as carved relief rather than as a camera record, shown seated and turned to the right. Whitman (1819-1892) first published *Leaves of Grass* in 1855 and revised it through several later editions, and by the time this reproduction was made, his reputation as a major American poet was steadily growing. The date of about 1906, taken from an old caption card, would place it more than a decade after his death, but that date is unverified and should be treated with some caution.
