Ulysses S. Grant appears in this half-length portrait, seated and turned to his right, a pose suited to the formal studio portraits of the late nineteenth century. The image belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, a large body of work linked to Mathew Brady and his studio, which recorded many of the political and military figures of the period. The print was made well after the original sitting, between 1950 and 1970 according to its record, so it shows how Grant's likeness was preserved and circulated long after his death in 1885.
