Lincoln is shown seated, turned to the right, with the figure cropped at mid-body and set within an oval frame, a vignette format that was popular in portrait photography of the period. The date of 1865 places the picture in the last year of Lincoln's life, when he was serving his second term as president. He sat for photographers often during the Civil War, and portraits like this one circulated widely as cartes de visite and prints, helping ordinary Americans see the face of a leader who was then guiding the country through its final months of war.
