Antal Dorati, the Hungarian-born conductor, is the subject here, shown seated at half length with a baton in hand and his attention on a sheet of music, turned to the right. The record gives no date, so the photograph's exact year is unknown. Dorati had a long career that took him from Budapest and Europe's opera houses to the United States, where he led orchestras including the Minneapolis Symphony and the Detroit Symphony and later the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington. A portrait like this one, centered on his study of the score, captures the working side of a conductor's life rather than the public stage.
