Julia Dent Grant stands full-length in this portrait, posed beside a table and chair, a format that gave photographers room to show a sitter's dress and bearing rather than just her face. She was the wife of Ulysses S. Grant, and the photograph dates to roughly the years of his presidency, from 1869 to 1877, though the print itself was made later. It belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, the group of Civil War-era and later portraits assembled by Mathew Brady's studio and photographer Levin Handy, now held by the Library of Congress. Prints from that collection are valued by researchers for documenting how political families presented themselves to the public.
