Langtry stands full length, turned to the right, with one hand resting near a vase on a pedestal, a pose that gives the portrait a formal, sculpted quality. The photographer was Napoleon Sarony, a New York studio man who made many celebrity portraits of stage performers in the 1880s. Langtry, born in Jersey in the Channel Islands, became known as the "Jersey Lily" after her entry into London society and then the stage, and she began touring the United States in 1882. The date given here is approximate, so the picture is best read as a record of how her public image was being built on both sides of the Atlantic.
