Tom Mix, the silent-film cowboy star, is shown here full length, standing and facing left with a revolver in each hand, a pose that captures the gunslinger persona that made him one of the biggest names in early Westerns. Mix (1880-1940) built his fame in the 1910s and 1920s, when he performed his own stunts and became one of Hollywood's most popular screen cowboys, often accompanied by his horse Tony. The caption card does not record a date, so the exact year of the photograph is unknown, but the costume and staging point to the heyday of his film career.
