Custer appears here in buckskin, the fringed frontier clothing he favored during his campaigns on the Great Plains, with a rifle held at his side. The photograph dates to 1872, a few years before his death at the Little Bigorn in June 1876, and it presents him as a figure of the western frontier rather than as a uniformed Civil War general. Portraits like this helped shape the public image of Custer as a dashing Indian fighter, an image that was popular in print during his lifetime and remains contested by historians today.
