Shown seated in buckskin, Daniel Morgan appears in the rough frontier dress that set his riflemen apart from the regular army. Morgan, a Virginia frontiersman born in 1736, rose to command a corps of riflemen in the Revolutionary War and won fame at Saratoga in 1777 and at Cowpens in 1781. This engraving dates to about 1861, roughly six decades after his death, when Americans were looking back to Revolutionary figures during the Civil War and renewed interest in Morgan as a frontier hero.
