Seated full length and turned to the left, this steel engraving shows William White, the Philadelphia clergyman who served as chaplain to the Continental Congress and later became the first Episcopal bishop of Pennsylvania. The print reproduces a painting by Thomas Sully, a leading Philadelphia portraitist of the early nineteenth century. White went on to serve as the first presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States, a role that made him a central figure as the church organized itself after the Revolution.
