Charles Young, the subject of this full-length seated portrait, was only the third Black graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, in 1889. He went on to serve with the Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments and became the highest-ranking Black officer in the regular army of his day. Here he wears his military dress uniform and sits turned to the left, a formal pose that reflects how carefully he presented his rank. The picture comes from the NAACP's visual records, which reflects the organization's work in the 1910s to challenge racial barriers, including the exclusion of Black officers from wartime service.
