Archbishop John Ireland, seated and turned to the left in this full-length portrait, was one of the most prominent Catholic leaders in the United States in the early twentieth century. Born in Ireland in 1838, he emigrated as a boy and rose to become Archbishop of St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was known for championing temperance, public schools, and the assimilation of immigrant Catholics into American civic life. The photograph dates to about 1908, late in his career, when he was a familiar public figure and a frequent voice in national debates over church and society.
