This full-length portrait shows a seated man turned to the left, and the studio mount on the reverse, marked Saunders no. 27, points to a commercial studio of the period. Portraits like this were often made for relatives and friends, and the seated pose with a full view of the figure was a common format from the 1860s through the 1880s, when such images were traded and kept in albums. The print belongs to the Feinberg-Whitman Collection, a group of materials connected to Walt Whitman, so its place in the Library of Congress reflects that association as much as the sitter's own life. Viewers may find the verso inscriptions and studio marking useful clues for dating the sitting.
