Few portraits on this board show a public figure in a family setting, and this one places Thomas Mott Osborne, seated and facing left, among his four sons. Osborne, a New York lawyer and politician from Auburn, was best known in this period for his work on penal reform, a cause that would bring him national attention when he became warden of Sing Sing prison in 1914. The photograph was made around 1910, when formal group portraits like this were a common way for prosperous families to record themselves. Its staging, with the father seated and the boys arranged around him, offers a useful view of how a reform-minded public man presented his private life.
