Three generations of men stand together on a lawn in this photograph: Merritt Edson, in uniform, posed with his grandfather, his father, and his own son. Edson was a United States Marine officer, and the portrait, made around 1930, predates the wartime fame he later earned. He received the Medal of Honor for his leadership on Guadalcanal in 1942, where the fighting on a ridge that now bears his name became a defining episode of the Pacific campaign. The formal outdoor setting and the careful arrangement of the four figures show how family portraits of the period presented lineage as a point of pride.
