This full-length view shows Marcus Garvey in the uniform he favored for public appearances as leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association. Garvey, born in Jamaica in 1887, built the UNIA into one of the largest mass movements of its era after he settled in New York in 1916, and by 1926 his parades and rallies in Harlem drew large crowds. The autograph and the credit to Toussaint Studios suggest the portrait was made for distribution among supporters. Garvey was deported from the United States in 1927, so this picture dates from the height of his American influence.
