Justice John Marshall Harlan, who sat on the Supreme Court from 1877 until his death in 1911, stands here in a golfing setting, turned to the left, in an informal view of a jurist more often shown in formal dress. Golf was still a fairly new pastime in the United States around 1900, and it had gained a following among professional and social circles in cities like Washington. Harlan is remembered chiefly for his lone dissent in *Plessy v. Ferguson* (1896), and this relaxed portrait offers a glimpse of the man away from the bench.
