Eugen Sandow, the Prussian-born strongman who became one of the most celebrated physical culturists of his day, stands here unclothed beside a column, turned to the left in a classical pose. The photograph was made around 1894 by B.J. Falk of New York, whose studio issued posed studies of Sandow that were sold widely to a public fascinated by his physique. Sandow built his reputation on exhibitions of strength and on the idea that the body could be shaped through exercise, and images like this helped turn the ideal of the sculpted male form into a popular spectacle. The print also reflects the era's habit of borrowing poses from Greek and Roman statuary to lend respectability to the display of the nude.
