Eugen Sandow stands turned to the left, wearing nothing but a fig leaf, in a pose borrowed from classical sculpture, which Sandow used to present his physique as art rather than spectacle. The strongman, born in Prussia in 1867, built his reputation in Britain and America through stage exhibitions of strength and muscular control, and studio studies like this one carried his image far beyond the theater. The photographer, B.J. Falk of New York, was one of several firms selling such figure studies in the 1890s, when audiences were drawn to the ideal body presented under the banner of art. Sandow's fame later made him a foundational figure in modern bodybuilding.
