Standing on one foot atop a pedestal and facing right, the figure in this c1893 photograph is labeled "Prof. B.A. McFadden," the name used by Bernarr Macfadden, who later became a prominent physical culture promoter. The print was made by the St. Louis studio of F.W. Guerin, whose copyright notice appears in the record. The fig leaf is worth noticing, since posed displays of the male form were a common way to show muscular development while staying within the decency standards of the day. Macfadden later founded *Physical Culture* magazine, which helped turn exercise and diet into a mass-market interest.
