Shown full length and standing with his fists raised, James J. Corbett is posed in the guarded stance that made him famous. Known as "Gentleman Jim," he was a heavyweight who favored footwork and defensive skill over brute force, and in 1892 he won the heavyweight title from John L. Sullivan in New Orleans under the Marquess of Queensberry rules. Studio portraits like this one, issued by a Chicago photographer around 1893, helped boxers build public images at a time when prizefighting drew wide attention but was often illegal and controversial.
