Shown in half-length and turned toward the right, the naturalist John James Audubon appears here as a man who had already been dead for about ten years when this print was made around 1861. The picture carries the copyright line of M.B. Brady, whose New York studio was among the best known in the United States and later became famous for its Civil War photographs. Because Audubon died in 1851, the portrait was probably copied from an earlier painting or engraving rather than taken from a live sitting. Audubon's *Birds of America* made him one of the most celebrated naturalists of his day.
