Shown in half-length and turned to the right, this portrait presents John Marshall Harlan as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a post he held from 1955 until his death in 1971. Appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harlan became known for his carefully reasoned opinions, especially his dissents, including his opposition to the one-person, one-vote ruling in *Reynolds v. Sims* (1964). He was the grandson of Justice John Marshall Harlan, who served on the Court from 1877 to 1911, a family connection that made the name especially recognizable in legal circles.
