Shown in half-length and turned to his right, the sitter here is John van Voorhees, identified only by name in the record. The print comes from a Brady negative, which links it to Mathew Brady's studios in New York and Washington, where many of the era's public figures and officers sat for portraits in the decades before and after the Civil War. The record dates the print only to a span between 1860 and 1910, so the exact sitting is unknown. Brady negatives were often reprinted and sold long after the original session, which is one reason such portraits survive in many copies.
