Rear Admiral John S. McCain appears here in a half-length official Navy portrait, turned slightly to the right, a format the service used for its senior officers during the Second World War. McCain, a naval aviator, led carrier forces in the Pacific campaign against Japan, and he died in 1945, before the war ended. His son, John S. McCain Jr., also became a Navy admiral, and his grandson, John McCain, later served as a U.S. senator. The portrait is a useful record of the officer at the height of his wartime command.
