A young Maricopa girl stands wrapped in a blanket with a woven basket tray balanced on her head, a pose that signals the everyday work of carrying goods and the basketry skill for which many Maricopa women were known. Edward S. Curtis made this portrait around 1907 as part of his ambitious effort to document Native peoples of North America through photographs, sound recordings, and written accounts. Curtis often arranged his subjects and their props, so the picture reflects his vision as much as daily life. Still, the basket and the blanket preserve details of material culture from the Gila River region of Arizona in the early twentieth century.
