Here the Washington Senators' star pitcher holds a little girl on an oversized baseball glove, a lighthearted touch that sets this portrait apart from the more formal sporting photographs of the era. Walter Johnson pitched for the Senators from 1907 to 1927, earning the nickname "The Big Train" for his fastball and becoming a beloved figure in the capital. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington during these decades, recorded many local people and events, and this print, made sometime between 1909 and 1932, reflects that record of city life.
