Two adults seated side by side, holding hands, with a girl of about fifteen standing between them, make this half-plate daguerreotype a quietly intimate family study. The sitters remain unidentified, but the record dates the plate to between 1844 and 1860 and credits Mathew Brady's studio, one of the most prominent portrait makers of the period. Gold toning, applied after exposure, deepened the silver image and gave it a warm cast, and trimming the plate to an oval fit the small cases popular at the time. A later transfer from the U.S. War College brought it to the Library of Congress in 1920.
