A woman in a bonnet, turned three-quarters to the left and shown from the waist up, is the sitter here, though her name was never recorded. The plate dates from between 1844 and 1860 and was produced in a studio run by Mathew Brady, whose firm helped make the daguerreotype a popular form of portraiture. Gold toning, applied after development, warmed the silver surface and made the image more durable. Numbers scratched on the back and a 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College show how the plate came to the Library of Congress.
