Shown half-length and turned three-quarters to the left, the sitter is William L. Dayton, a New Jersey lawyer and politician. Dayton served as a United States senator from New Jersey and, in 1856, ran as the Republican vice-presidential candidate alongside John C. Frémont. The gold toning gives the plate its warm, softened tones, and it was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, one of the best-known portrait operations of the 1840s and 1850s. The identification comes from a matching engraving by J.C. Buttre, a common way for cataloguers to name sitters whose plates carry no inscription.
