This half-length daguerreotype shows Washington Irving turned three-quarters to the left, and it is a copy of an earlier plate by John Plumbe, made from the reverse of the original image. Catalogers identified the sitter by comparing it with engravings, and the record credits the copy to Mathew Brady's studio. Irving, author of *The Sketch Book* and the tales of Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane, was one of the most widely read American writers of his era. He died in 1859, so the portrait comes from the final years of his life.
