This half-length daguerreotype shows George Edmund Badger, a North Carolina lawyer and politician who later served as Secretary of the Navy under President Millard Fillmore, turned three-quarters to the left. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's New York studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process and Brady was building his reputation on portraits of public men. Its gold toning and the hallmark on the plate are worth noticing, as is the number scratched on the back, which suggests how studios tracked their work. The image came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College.
