John A. Dix appears here in civilian dress, with long hair, turned three-quarters to the left in a half-plate daguerreotype. Dix was a New York politician and Army officer who served as Secretary of the Treasury in 1861, when he telegraphed orders that anyone hauling down the American flag should be shot on the spot. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning adds warmth to the silvery image. The back bears a scratched inscription with his name, and the plate was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920.
