Shown in three-quarter length and turned to the left, John Van Buren was the eldest son of President Martin Van Buren, and his New York contemporaries knew him as "Prince John" for his polished manner and political ambitions. This half-plate daguerreotype dates from between 1844 and 1860, a period when Mathew Brady's studio was making portraits of prominent Americans and the daguerreotype was the leading photographic process. The pose reflects the formal conventions of the era, when sitters of public standing often chose a dignified, partial-length view over a close face-only portrait.
