Scratched into the face of this half-plate daguerreotype are the name Walter Jones and the number 80, with the name and 44 inscribed on the back. The sitter appears three-quarter length and turned three-quarters to the left, a pose common in studio portraits of the 1840s and 1850s. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, whose galleries in New York and Washington made daguerreotypes of many prominent Americans. The record probably identifies the sitter as Walter Jones of Washington, D.C., who lived from 1776 to 1861, and the plate was later transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920.
