This three-quarter length portrait shows John Hay seated and turned to the left, a pose that keeps the focus on his face and bearing. It was made by J.E. Purdy of Boston around 1902, when Hay was serving as Secretary of State under Theodore Roosevelt, a post that placed him at the center of the Open Door policy toward China. Hay was also a poet, known for *Pike County Ballads*, and a former private secretary to Abraham Lincoln, so portraits of him from this period often present him as both statesman and man of letters.
