Anna Freud, the youngest daughter of Sigmund Freud, is shown here seated in three-quarter length and turned to the left, a pose that lets the viewer see both her face and the set of her shoulders. The portrait dates to about 1914, when she was a teenager, and it came from the Sigmund Freud Archives in New York, which helped preserve the family's photographic record. Anna would go on to become a pioneering psychoanalyst in her own right, especially in the study of child development, so this early image shows her before that career took shape. Its place in a collection of 1910s portraits also makes it a useful glimpse of how formal studio photography was done in that decade.
