Seated and turned to the left in this three-quarter length view, Lise Meitner appears as the Austrian-born physicist whose work reshaped nuclear science. With Otto Hahn in Berlin, she helped explain how uranium nuclei split in 1938, and she soon fled Nazi Germany for Sweden. The portrait comes from Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C. studio known for its many sitters in public life. Hahn alone received the 1944 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery, a omission historians still discuss.
