Shown seated, three-quarter length, and turned to the left, this is Charles Sumner, the Massachusetts senator and abolitionist. The photograph reproduces a painting by Edgar Parker, and its copyright entry points to a date around 1873, shortly before Sumner died in March 1874. By then he had served in the Senate for more than two decades, and in 1871 he lost his chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee after a bitter break with President Grant. Photographic copies like this one let a painted likeness reach admirers far beyond the original canvas.
